How does my new storage heater work?

Modified on Mon, 2 Dec at 3:26 PM

Much like traditional storage heaters, our storage heaters charge on the off peak supply. However the heaters must be turned on, on the peak (24hr) supply and the off peak supply at all times.

During the day, the heater uses the timer profile & temperature setting to cycle the fan on and off to heat the room. The heater will turn on the fan if in a "Comfort" / "Heating On" position and only if the room temperature is lower than the target temperature set point.

At midnight our storage heaters perform a calculation to determine how long the heater needs to charge the core (store heat) to meet your heating needs. This considers (but not limited to):

  • Timer profile (total hours of room heating)
  • Temperature set point for the next day & at midnight
  • Room temperature at midnight
  • Rate of temperature drop in the room
  • Residual core temperature at midnight
  • 3 day rolling average
  • Seasonal band (time of year)

Once the calculation has been completed, the heater will charge when the off peak electricity is available; and will stop charging when it has taken what it needs.

Following installation, all an end user needs to do is set the heater’s timer to when they want the room to be warm and the temperature to their ideal target room temperature. The heater will do the rest.

Note: XLE/Slimline storage heaters do not need any charge times set. They will charge when the off peak cable becomes live. A Quantum RF will only need to have their charge times set if installed on a single power cable. Please click here for charge time instructions.

Note: If the off peak electricity cuts off before the end of the calculated charge length, the heater will charge as soon as the off peak electricity becomes available again.
