What are the expected resistance readings for the Quantum and XLE/Slimline storage heater elements?

Modified on Tue, 3 Sep at 9:38 AM

The elements in a Quantum or XLE/Slimline storage heater can be checked by an electrician to verify they have the correct resistance.

WARNING. The appliance must be safely isolated from both mains supplies and proven dead before carrying out any work!

Each element can be measured individually using a multimeter and the resistance reading compared to the table below. In order to measure the resistance of only one element at a time, removing the spade termonal wire from one side of the element should be done to ensure only one element is being measured.

On Series A to G Dimplex Quantum, there was a 4th element for Boost only use, at the bottom of the heater. The resistance of that is as follows:

Heater SizeResistance (Ohms) approx.
50149
7095

If an insulation resistance test is performed on elements, it can be done tested to 500v and would be tested between element sheath and element terminal and the anticipated insulation resistance would be at least 1Megohm. As the elements are mineral insulated, running the element for a few hours can often drive out any moisture and the element may then return to >1Megohm insulation resistance if seen to be below this on an initial test.
